Ancho Reyes Verde Chile Liqueur is a 750mL liqueur bottled at 40% ABV, made in Puebla, Mexico, from green poblano chiles harvested early, while still green and bright. A portion of the chiles are fire-roasted, then the harvest is mashed and macerated for six months in neutral cane spirit from Veracruz, hand-blended by the Maestra Maceradora, rested, and bottled and labelled by hand. Based on a 1927 Puebla recipe from the cantina menjurje tradition, Verde is the fresh, herbaceous side of the Ancho Reyes family. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

The Green Half of a Puebla Legend

In 1920s Puebla, the cantinas of the Barrio del Artista poured menjurjes — homemade liqueurs built on whatever the market offered — and the recipe behind Ancho Reyes dates to that scene in 1927. The Original uses poblanos left to redden and sun-dry into anchos; Verde takes the same chile off the vine early, while it is still green, grassy and sharp, and fire-roasts a portion of the harvest to keep one foot in the smoke. The result is the brighter bottle: fresh poblano heat, roasted pineapple sweetness and a savoury edge that bartenders reach for. Compare it with the Original on the Ancho Reyes vendor page and find more cocktail firepower in our spirits collection.

Tasting Notes

Brand notes describe fire-roasted green poblano, charred tropical fruit and a thread of smoke on the nose; golden roasted pineapple, savoury acidity and bright green chile through the palate; and a piquant, warming heat on the finish — sweet, spicy and herbaceous in balance.

How to Enjoy

The brand's own serves are the Spicy Verde Margarita (Verde, blanco tequila, lime, light agave, salted rim) and the Verde Gimlet with gin and cucumber; it is also excellent chilled and neat. Blanco tequila for the Margarita is in our tequila collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Ancho Reyes Verde and the Original?
The chile's harvest moment. Verde uses green poblanos picked early, a portion fire-roasted, for a fresh, herbaceous heat; the Original uses ripe poblanos sun-dried into ancho chiles for a deeper, smokier sweetness. Both are 40% ABV and macerated six months in cane spirit.

How spicy is Ancho Reyes Verde?
Piquant rather than punishing — a warm, bright poblano heat that builds gently over the liqueur's sweetness, designed to season a cocktail rather than overwhelm it.

What cocktails use Ancho Reyes Verde?
The Spicy Verde Margarita and the Verde Gimlet are the brand's signature serves; it also adds green heat to vodka, gin and tequila drinks generally.
