Eigashima Shuzo Akashi Blended Japanese Whisky — the White Oak blend — is a 750mL Japanese blended whisky bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) at the White Oak distillery in Akashi, Hyogo, on the Seto Inland Sea coast. Blended in the Scotch tradition with Japanese precision, it combines lightly peated malt whisky with grain whisky, vatted across ex-bourbon, barley shochu, sherry and new oak casks per the US importer's spec — and it is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

A Sake House That Became a Whisky Pioneer

Eigashima Shuzo has brewed in Akashi since 1679, and it is widely credited with receiving Japan's first whisky licence, in 1919 — generations before Japanese whisky became a global obsession. Its White Oak distillery works on a small, seasonal scale by the sea, and this blend is its everyday expression: lightly peated malt for a whisper of smoke, grain whisky for softness, and a vatting centred on ex-bourbon casks. See the house on the Eigashima Shuzo vendor page, or browse our Japanese whisky collection.

Tasting Notes

Per the importer (Skurnik): lemon, cherry pit, toffee and a maritime note on the nose; vanilla and pine nuts on the palate; and a long, wheat-forward finish with peat underneath.

How to Enjoy

Built for the Japanese highball: pour it over clear ice in a tall glass, add soda and a twist of lemon. It also pours cleanly neat as an aperitif whisky. More blends are in our Japanese whisky collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Akashi whisky really Japanese?
Yes — it is distilled and blended by Eigashima Shuzo at its White Oak distillery in Akashi, Hyogo, Japan, a sake-brewing house founded in 1679 and widely credited with Japan's first whisky licence (1919).

Is the Akashi blend peated?
Lightly — the malt component is lightly peated, so the smoke sits in the background behind citrus, vanilla and oak.

What is the difference between Akashi Blended and Akashi Single Malt?
The blend combines malt and grain whiskies and is bottled at 40% ABV; the single malt is 100% malted barley from White Oak, bottled at a higher strength.
