One Distillery, a Brewer's Cask Rack
White Oak is the whisky distillery of Eigashima Shuzo, the Akashi sake house founded in 1679 and widely credited with Japan's first whisky licence in 1919 (the distillery itself was built in 1984). For its single malt, the distillery leans on its brewer's curiosity: ex-bourbon and new oak casks sit alongside sherry casks and casks that held its own barley shochu, and the vatting of those single-malt casks — not a blend of whiskies — is what makes the Akashi single malt taste like nowhere else. See the house on the Eigashima Shuzo vendor page, or browse our Japanese whisky collection.
Tasting Notes
Per the importer (Skurnik): yellow apple, white chocolate and salted caramel, with subtle peat and an oceanic salinity running underneath, and a long, buttery finish.
How to Enjoy
Pour it neat or with a few drops of water to open the salted caramel and apple, or lengthen it into a highball for a lighter serve that keeps the fruit. More single malts are in our Japanese whisky collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Akashi Single Malt a blended whisky?
No — it is a single malt, 100% malted barley from the one White Oak distillery. The "blend" language in older copy refers to its vatting of many different cask types, all holding the same distillery's malt.
What casks go into Akashi Single Malt?
Ex-bourbon, barley shochu, sherry and new oak casks, per the US importer's spec for this bottling.
Does Akashi Single Malt have an age statement?
The US 750mL bottling carries no age statement; an age-stated 500mL bottling exists for other markets and is a different SKU.
