Achaval Ferrer Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate Cabernet of one of Mendoza's benchmark houses — 750mL, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grown in Mendoza, Argentina, and aged in used French oak, pouring deep ruby with cassis, blackberry, cedar and sweet tobacco. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

  • Size: 750mL
  • Grape: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Ageing: Used French oak barrels, ~9–12 months depending on vintage
  • Origin: Mendoza, Argentina
  • Style: Full-bodied estate red

The House That Taught Mendoza to Pick Less

Achaval Ferrer was founded in 1998 by Santiago Achaval and Manuel Ferrer with a then-radical idea for Argentina: farm old, ungrafted vines for radically low yields and let concentration come from the vineyard, not the cellar. The philosophy made the house famous for Malbec, and it runs through this Cabernet too — fully ripe fruit picked for balance, fermented and then rested in used French oak barrels so the cedar and tobacco frame the cassis and blackberry rather than covering them. Pour it alongside the estate's better-known red in our red wine selection, browse the wine cellar, or visit the Achaval Ferrer vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Cassis and blackberry with cedar and sweet tobacco (winery descriptors). Palate: Full-bodied and ripe, the dark fruit carried on firm, polished tannins. Finish: Long and savoury, oak spice and tobacco leaf lingering.

How to Enjoy

Decant for thirty minutes and serve with grilled red meat — this is a steak Cabernet in the Mendoza mould, generous enough for ribeye and structured enough for lamb. Cellaring a few years will soften the tannins further.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Achaval Ferrer make its Cabernet Sauvignon? In Mendoza, Argentina — estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, aged in used French oak barrels before release.

Is Achaval Ferrer the same as the Finca wines? No. The Fincas (Altamira, Mirador, Bella Vista) are the house's single-vineyard icons. This is the estate Mendoza Cabernet — the same low-yield philosophy at an everyday-bordeaux level.

What food pairs with Mendoza Cabernet? Grilled beef above all — the combination of ripe fruit and firm tannin is built for steak, short ribs and hard aged cheeses.
