It is made at Aberfeldy Distillery in Perthshire, the heart malt of Dewar's, from 100% malted barley and the water of the Pitilie Burn, famed locally for its deposits of alluvial gold — the source of the whisky's "Golden Dram" nickname. The Golden Dram, Aged Twelve Years
John Dewar's sons built Aberfeldy in 1896 a short walk from their father's birthplace, and it has supplied the heart malt for Dewar's blends ever since — which is why the single malt is such a direct taste of the house. The honey at its centre is made, not added: a long fermentation of around 70 hours conjures it from the malted barley itself. Twelve years across the distillery's four cask styles cost real whisky — the brand notes almost a third is lost to evaporation, the angels' share, before the 12 is bottled. Tasting Notes
Per the distillery: a honeyed dram scented with spiced, honeyed plump fruits on the nose; a syrupy palate with lots of vanilla and fudge; and a finish carrying just a whisper of smoke — honey, spiced fruits and creamy vanilla are its flavour pillars.
