Fabulous Bold Scotch

Tonight’s dram is Batch 7 of GlenAllachie’s 10-year cask strength series. Like every batch, it is finished in Pedro Ximenez, oloroso sherry, and Rioja wine casks – setting high expectations for an excellent dram, and boy-oh-boy, does it deliver. It is dark and thick, like a heavy cream – almost chewy. It opens with bold black cherries, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and orange zest, with the dark chocolate transitioning to cocoa powder, then joined by figs and dark thick honey, seemlingly squeezed from the bees in the black of night, with the ever-present charred oak in the background. Black pepper, clove, chili, and a spice-cabinet of spices join the flavor party. The legs cling to the glass like thick honey, continuing to tantilize the tastebuds for nearly eternity (i.e. a long finish). This is a complex dram, not for the faint of heart. Similar to the Aberlour A’bunadh and Tamdhu batch strength in bold yummy flavors, great mouthfeel, and thick clingy legs, the batches of GlenAllachie’s 10-year cask strength series deliver much more diverse flavor profiles. Bottom line, you can’t go wrong with any of the GlenAllachie 10-year cask strength series. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
