Espiritu Lauro Reposado Mezcal is an ensamble mezcal from San Agustín Amatengo, Oaxaca, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750mL bottle. It blends 70% Espadín with 30% Karwinskii (San Martín) agave — the Karwinskii maturing 15 to 17 years in the Oaxacan hills — then rests 3 to 4 months in re-charred American white oak barrels. The result keeps the joven's wild brightness and adds caramel, vanilla, and a smoky-sweet depth. Order online from Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • Origin: San Agustín Amatengo, Oaxaca — producer ESPÍRITU CORSA, S.A. de C.V.

Three Generations in Amatengo

Espíritu Lauro is made at the family's own palenque in San Agustín Amatengo, acquired in 2010 and operating for three generations — the same palenque behind the Santa Pedrera and Buen Bicho labels. The house style is a two-agave ensamble: workhorse Espadín for brightness and body, plus slow-grown Karwinskii for wild, savory depth. A short rest in re-charred oak rounds the reposado without taming it. Explore the Espíritu Lauro range and more mezcal.

Tasting Notes

Per credible reviews: creamier and richer than the joven, with deep caramel and vanilla from the oak, tropical fruit binding it together, and a finish of sweet smoked meat, warm spice, and a refreshing spearmint lift. Straw-gold in the glass, strong and complex with a smoky nuance.

How to Enjoy

Neat in a copita — the oak influence is delicate enough that chilling would flatten it. It also makes a superb "oaxacan old fashioned" with a touch of agave nectar and chocolate bitters.
