Denizen Merchant's Reserve 8 Year Old Rum is the bottle built to make a historically accurate Mai Tai — 750mL at 43% ABV (86 proof), blending Jamaican Plummer-style pot-still rums with Rhum Grande Arome from Martinique — and you can order it online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • ABV: 43% (86 proof)
  • Size: 750mL
  • Age: Aged up to 8 years in small 200-liter once-used American oak bourbon barrels
  • Blend: 8-year Jamaican pot-still rums from Worthy Park, Hampden, Clarendon and New Yarmouth + high-ester Rhum Grande Arome from Le Galion, Martinique
  • Method: Slow fermentation up to two weeks for high-ester development
  • Producer: Denizen Rum (Hotaling & Co.) — created with Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove

The Rum That Recreates the 1944 Mai Tai

Trader Vic's original 1944 Mai Tai leaned on a funky, high-ester Martinique component that simply didn't exist in any commercial bottle — until Denizen set out to rebuild it. Working with bartender Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove, the house married rich Jamaican pot-still rums with Martinique's rare Rhum Grande Arome to make the first historically accurate commercial Mai Tai rum. The name nods to the Dutch merchants who once blended Caribbean rums reserved for their finest batches. Shop the rum collection at Del Mesa Liquor, compare other aged rums, or explore everything from Denizen.

Tasting Notes

Bright fruit and caramel balanced by earthy, grassy depth — the signature of the Grande Arome component. The nose shows petrol, iodine, cinnamon, pear, grass and herbs; the palate brings leather, tobacco, sweet potato and smoke; and the finish is smooth and spicy, lingering on molasses, caramel, vanilla, dried banana and oak spice.

How to Enjoy

This exists for one cocktail first: the 1944 Mai Tai — 2 oz Denizen Merchant's Reserve, fresh lime, orange curacao and orgeat. It also elevates a classic Daiquiri or any tiki drink that calls for funk. Sip it neat once to taste what the Martinique component is doing before you mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

What rum goes in an authentic Mai Tai?
Denizen Merchant's Reserve was designed with Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove to recreate the Martinique component in Trader Vic's third iteration of his 1944 Mai Tai — it is the reference bottle for the historically accurate serve.

What is Rhum Grande Arome?
A high-ester, molasses-based rhum style from Martinique — here from the Le Galion distillery — prized for its funky, concentrated flavor. It is the component most commercial rums are missing.

Is it 43% or 40% ABV?
Official brand copy is 43% ABV (86 proof); one lone retailer listing at 40% is an error.

Where is it made?
A blend of Jamaican pot-still rums (Worthy Park, Hampden, Clarendon, New Yarmouth) with Martinique grande arome, bottled for Denizen Rum (Hotaling & Co.).

Tiki history in a bottle — add Denizen Merchant's Reserve to your cart at Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA, and taste the Mai Tai the way Trader Vic meant it.
