Compass Box Crimson Casks Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Compass Box Crimson Casks Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is the sherry-driven pillar of Compass Box's Core Collection: a 46% ABV (92 proof), 750mL Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, natural colour, not chill-filtered, built around first-fill oloroso sherry butts — and it is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.
Released in September 2024 as one of two new additions (with Nectarosity) to Compass Box's retooled Core Collection — replacing Spice Tree and The Story of the Spaniard — Crimson Casks celebrates transformative sherry cask maturation. The label's Forest King, crowned in oak, is the visual: a high proportion of single malts aged in first-fill oloroso sherry-seasoned American oak butts, with 7.3% Highland blended malt matured in custom French oak with heavy toast and a Spanish red-wine barrique influence. Lead whiskymaker James Saxon calls it "intense wine-derived richness and spicy finish." The US launch price was $75.
Tasting notes (official Compass Box fact sheet): chocolate fudge cake undercut with clove and cardamom; hints of plum jam and redcurrant jelly, then rich cherry, toffee, and oak; a finish of raisin, honey, and brown sugar. Official serving suggestion: drizzle over ice cream to reveal fig and cinnamon.
Why buy Crimson Casks? Because it is Compass Box's sherry-first showcase — first-fill oloroso butts and custom heavy-toast French oak in a 46%, natural-colour, non-chill-filtered blended malt. Browse the Compass Box brand collection, more Scotch whisky, and other international spirits.
Serving note: neat in a tulip glass to unfold the sherry layers; the brand suggests over ice cream for fig and cinnamon.
What is a blended malt? A blend of single malt whiskies from different distilleries, with no grain whisky — this one built around first-fill oloroso sherry casks.
Is it chill-filtered or coloured? Neither — 46% ABV, natural colour, not chill-filtered.
How does it differ from Nectarosity? Crimson Casks is the sherry-driven, wine-rich pillar of the Core Collection; Nectarosity is the patisserie-inspired, American-oak-driven one.
What casks were used? First-fill oloroso sherry-seasoned American oak butts, custom heavy-toast French oak, and Spanish red-wine barriques.
