A Vintage, Deconstructed as Art

Dom Perignon only declares a vintage in exceptional years, and for 2006 the house invited Frankfurt-born artist Michael Riedel — known for reworking text and media into visual art — to interpret the champagne's long maturation. Riedel took the "D" and "P" of the maison's name and layered and repeated them hundreds of times across the box and bottle labels, a "poetic optical metaphor for the passage of time" echoing the wine's own transformation on its lees. The design followed earlier artist collaborations with Jeff Koons, Karl Lagerfeld, and David Lynch, and belongs to Dom Perignon's long tradition of pairing great vintages with contemporary art.

Tasting Notes

Nose: fresh almond and harvest fruit opening to candied lemon and dried fruit, with darker smoky and toasted notes; some tasters find white flowers, toasted hazelnuts, and a hint of liquorice. Palate: silky and energetic, warm and deep, splendid breadth with a beautiful, exquisite bitterness and notes of iodine and salt. Finish: long, mineral, elegant, with lingering citrus and fine bitterness.

How to Enjoy

Serve well chilled at 10–12°C in a white-wine glass rather than a narrow flute, to let the vintage's complexity open. The 2006 is drinking beautifully now and has the structure for further cellaring. It is a gift piece as much as a wine — the Riedel box is the presentation.
