Islay Barley, Islay Farms, Islay Smoke
Port Charlotte is Bruichladdich's heavily peated range, and the Islay Barley releases are its terroir statement: every grain in the 2014 vintage grew on the island — Concerto and Propino barley from eight farms, among them Coull, Rockside, Sunderland and Mulindry — harvested in 2013, peated to 40 PPM, and bottled on Islay with Islay spring water. The Islay-grown barley goes beyond flavour, the distillery says — it evokes a true sense of place. Browse the Bruichladdich collection and more Scotch whisky at Del Mesa.
Tasting Notes
Malty digestive biscuits and peat embers open the nose, with vanilla, honey, toffee and crème brûlée, then lemon rind, grapefruit, ripe melon, peach and crisp red apple over a maritime note with nutmeg and cinnamon. The palate starts with a citrus tang, then sweet ripe fruit and gentle peat smoke — apricot, peach and melon with coconut, creamy marzipan and tobacco — finishing on soft stone fruit, toasted oak and lingering dry barbecue smoke.
How to Enjoy
Neat, or with a splash of water to open the fruit under the smoke — a heavily peated malt that rewards slow drinking.
