The two halves do exactly what you'd hope: toasted oak, brown sugar, and dark cherry from the bourbon; rye spice and peppercorn from the rye. The palate is oily toffee, vanilla, and cinnamon heat; the finish long, warming, leather and spice. Among cask-strength blends, The Compromise is that rare bottle built for both camps — bourbon drinkers get the sweetness, rye drinkers get the bite, and nobody has to compromise on proof.
