Bhakta 50 Year Old Brandy Barrel 12 Lafayette
Bhakta 50 Year Old Brandy — Barrel 12 "Lafayette" is a single-barrel Armagnac older than any whiskey on the market — 48.8% ABV (97.6 proof) in a 750mL bottle, drawn from a barrel of Armagnac vintages spanning 1868 to 1970, finished in French oak casks that previously held premium Islay whisky. It's one of the Bhakta 50 series: individual barrels from Château Bhakta's ancient cellars, each named for a historical figure — Barrel 12 honors the Marquis de Lafayette and the France–America alliance. Only 578 bottles exist. Available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

A Barrel Older Than the Automobile
Raj Bhakta made his name founding WhistlePig, then did something no American whiskey maker could: he bought Maison Ryst-Dupeyron in Armagnac and inherited cellars of Armagnac older than living memory. The Bhakta 50 series bottles those cellars one barrel at a time — Barrel 12 "Lafayette" weaves eight vintages from 1868 to 1970 into a single cask, then lets Islay whisky casks add a whisper of peat to a century and a half of French oak. Tasting Notes
The official notes open sweet — caramel, toffee, crème brûlée — developing into floral lilac, violets, and muguet. The Islay finish gives a powerful, peaty attack that softens gradually without overpowering; the palate runs through floral essences, spices, pepper, tobacco, toast, orange peel, and marmalade with a quite dry, oaky, tannic mouthfeel and especially good alcohol balance. K&L's take: "a flambéed dessert course in a smoky backroom."
How to Enjoy
Neat, in a tulip glass, with time — a 150-year-spanning Armagnac deserves an unhurried pour. This is a milestone bottle: anniversaries, closures, the kind of evening you remember.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "Lafayette" mean?
Each Bhakta 50 barrel is named for a historical figure — Barrel 12 honors the Marquis de Lafayette, celebrating the France–America alliance.
Is this Cognac?
No — it's Armagnac, France's older brandy region, from the house of Ryst-Dupeyron (now Château Bhakta). The two are distinct appellations.
Why is it so limited?
It's a single barrel of extremely old Armagnac — when the 578 bottles are gone, that barrel's story ends.
