Westward American Single Malt Rum Cask Finish Whiskey
45% ABV (90 proof) | 750mL | American single malt, rum-cask finished — Westward Rum Cask Finish is the Portland distillery's tropical turn on its bold Northwest single malt: 100% malted barley, ale-yeast fermentation, aged in new lightly charred American oak, then finished an additional year in barrels seasoned with rum — Westward's team spent five years with the Leal family developing Casa Magdalena, an all-natural cane-to-glass rum distilled in Escuintla, Guatemala, and the barrel partnership ran both ways. Non-chill filtered, small batch. Available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA.
The rum casks lift the malt into the tropics: clover honey and butterscotch on the nose; tropical fruit, white peach and coconut on the palate; and a tangerine, molasses and waffle-cone finish (La Maison du Whisky). Among American single malts, this is the island vacation bottle — Oregon craft with a Guatemalan accent. Neat, or in a highball with soda.
