Uncle Nearest Single Barrel Whiskey
Uncle Nearest Single Barrel Whiskey is a 750mL Tennessee whiskey bottled uncut, straight from a single barrel at cask strength — so the proof varies from barrel to barrel (documented barrels run roughly 115 to 122 proof). Made at the Uncle Nearest Distillery in Shelbyville, middle Tennessee, it passes through the Lincoln County Process — filtration through sugar-maple charcoal — that defines Tennessee whiskey, and it honours Nathan "Nearest" Green, the first known African American master distiller, who taught a young Jack Daniel the craft. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

The Barrel Decides — That Is the Point
Single barrel whiskey is the purest expression of a distillery's art: one barrel, hand-selected for standout character, bottled with no blending and no dilution. That means no two bottles are identical — and for Uncle Nearest, whose barrels run well past 115 proof, each bottle is a snapshot of one barrel's life in new charred American oak, rounded by the maple-charcoal mellowing of the Lincoln County Process. The brand was founded in 2017 by Fawn Weaver to honour Nearest Green, and it is now blended under his great-great-granddaughter, Victoria Eady Butler. This is the standard Single Barrel — not the separate 11-year-old 1820 edition, a different SKU. Shop the Uncle Nearest collection and more American whiskey at Del Mesa.
Tasting Notes
Rich and powerful, as cask-strength Tennessee whiskey should be: toasted oak, deep caramel, vanilla bean, and marzipan on the nose with roasted corn and dark cherry. The palate is full-bodied — brown sugar, rich caramel, roasted nuts, baking chocolate, orange zest, and dark fruit over baking spice and black pepper — finishing long and warming with char, clove, tobacco, and lingering oak spice.
How to Enjoy
Add water slowly, in drops, until it opens to your taste — at cask strength it rewards patience. A single large cube works too. Once diluted to your liking, it is outstanding in a Tennessee Old Fashioned.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't the label list an ABV?
It does — but only for that specific barrel. Every single barrel is bottled at its own cask strength, so the proof printed on your bottle is unique to your bottle.
Is Uncle Nearest a bourbon?
It is Tennessee whiskey: it meets bourbon's legal requirements but goes through the Lincoln County Process (sugar-maple charcoal mellowing) that defines the Tennessee style.
Is this the same as the 1820 edition?
No — the 1820 Single Barrel Edition is a separate, 11-year-minimum release. This is the standard Single Barrel, with no age statement.
