Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey is a 750mL Tennessee whiskey bottled at 93 proof (46.5% ABV), drawn in small batches from barrels aged a minimum of seven years, distilled, aged and bottled by Uncle Nearest at the Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Every batch is curated by Master Blender Victoria Eady Butler — Nearest Green's great-great-granddaughter — and her signature appears on the back of each bottle. The name marks 1884, believed to be the last year Green put his own whiskey into barrels before retiring. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Every Batch Signed by a Descendant

The 1884 is the most personal bottle in the Uncle Nearest range: the barrels are hand-selected, the blend is built by a descendant of the man whose name is on the label, and her signature is embossed on the back of every batch's bottles. At 93 proof it drinks a shade softer than the 100-proof 1856 while keeping the Tennessee character — caramel, maple and oak shaped by charcoal mellowing in the Lincoln County tradition that Green himself helped to perfect. The expression has been recognised with Best in Class at the 2025 SIP Awards and Best Tennessee Whiskey at the 2024 ADI International Spirits Competition. See the full range on the Uncle Nearest vendor page, or browse our whisky collection.

Tasting Notes

Per the brand: honey and warm brown sugar on the nose with cedar, orange peel, a floral tobacco note, ground ginger and white pepper; the palate is caramel against spicy wood tannin, with baking chocolate, cigar leaf, nougat and cinnamon; the finish is long and smooth — cinnamon, dark chocolate, oak tannin and maple syrup.

How to Enjoy

Neat or on a large cube as an everyday Tennessee sipper, and an excellent whiskey for a Lynchburg-style lemonade or a classic sour. More small-batch American whiskey is in our spirits collection.
