Transcontinental Rum Line Panama 2011
Transcontinental Rum Line Panama 2011 is a vintage-dated, 750mL Panamanian rum bottled at 43.4% ABV (86.8 proof) by La Maison du Whisky — the Paris institution behind one of the world's great independent bottling programs. Distilled in 2011 at an undisclosed distillery (the label coyly calls it the "Mysterious Distillery"), it's a molasses-based rum selected and bottled without the blending and sweetening that define most commercial Panamanian rum. An Independent Eye on Panama
Most Panamanian rum arrives blended, sweetened, and smoothed into sameness. The Transcontinental Rum Line does the opposite: La Maison du Whisky's buyers travel the rum world selecting single distillates — Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, Fiji — and bottle them as transparent vintage expressions, the way independent Scotch bottlers have always worked. The Panama 2011 is a fresh, green, herbal take on the country's rum, all tarragon and mint against toffee and caramel — a side of Panama most drinkers never meet. Tasting Notes
The nose is toffee and herbs — green tarragon drizzled with thin, intense caramel, fresh mint, sharp apple, and buttery icing, with crisp barley sugar and lemon developing. The palate leads with pear drops, rhubarb and custard sweets, and banana purée, building fruity notes over pine needles and green leafiness, with toffee sweetness underneath studded with spice and sweet black licorice. The finish brings the herbs back up front with a gentle aniseed tingle fading to light treacle toffee.
How to Enjoy
Neat in a tulip glass to catch the herbal lift, or over a single large cube. Its green, spicy character makes a superb Daiquiri or a rum Old Fashioned with real backbone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which distillery made the Panama 2011?
La Maison du Whisky doesn't say — the label lists a "Mysterious Distillery," standard practice for independent bottlers protecting their sources.
Is this rum sweetened?
No. Unlike many commercial Panamanian rums, Transcontinental Rum Line bottlings are selected for their natural character with no added sugar.
What does "vintage 2011" mean for rum?
The rum was distilled in 2011, so every drop in the bottle comes from that year's distillation — a single-vintage snapshot rather than a multi-year blend.
