Smoke from the Blackpitts

Blackpitts takes its name from the old district behind Teeling's Newmarket distillery — once a warren of malting houses and tanneries, and named for the black pits used to cure hides and dry malt. Teeling dries its barley over peat to roughly 55 parts per million of phenols, then triple-distills it, which keeps the smoke present but softens its edges compared with heavily peated Islay style. Tasting Notes

Nose: Barbecue smoke, charred wood and clove. Palate: Butterscotch sweetness with salted caramel and dark chocolate under the smoke. Finish: Warm pepper and dry smoke, lingering.

How to Enjoy

Pour it neat to get the full arc from smoke to sweetness, add a splash of water to open the Sauternes-cask fruit, or use it where a whiskey cocktail wants a smoky backbone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How peaty is Teeling Blackpitts? The malt is peated to around 55 PPM, but triple distillation softens the smoke — expect barbecue smoke and charred wood rather than medicinal Islay peat.

What casks is Blackpitts aged in? Ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Sauternes wine casks, which add the butterscotch and caramel sweetness behind the smoke.

Where is it made? At the Teeling distillery in Dublin, Ireland — the first new distillery to open in the city in over 125 years when it launched in 2015.

Dublin smoke with a sweet streak — order Teeling Blackpitts online from Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA.
