Sandeman 50 Year Porto Tawny Wine is a 750mL tawny port from Sandeman, blended in Vila Nova de Gaia from Douro Valley wines matured in oak for an average of around five decades — one of the oldest age-stated tawny categories any port house bottles. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

Five Decades in Oak, One Glass

Sandeman has aged port in its Gaia lodges since 1790, and the 50 Year Tawny sits at the summit of the house's age-stated range: components averaging half a century in cask, where slow oxidation turns port amber, nutty and impossibly concentrated, and evaporation takes most of every barrel before blending. Few wines anywhere are bottled at this age. Explore the Sandeman collection, more wine, and the dessert wine shelves at Del Mesa.

Tasting Notes

Deep amber-mahogany. Layers of walnut, dried fig, orange peel, honey and polished old wood; the palate is silken and intense — nuts, dried fruit, spice and a lift of acidity that keeps fifty years of sweetness fresh; an endless, warming finish.

How to Enjoy

Serve lightly chilled, neat, in a small white-wine glass — no decanting needed, as tawny is bottled ready to drink. Superb with aged cheeses, nut desserts, or entirely on its own after dinner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "50 Year" mean on a tawny port? The blend's components average around fifty years of oak ageing, certified in the age-stated tawny category — among the oldest ports bottled.

How long does it keep after opening? Tawny ports are already oxidatively aged, so an opened bottle keeps well for several weeks, recorked and stored cool.

Where is it made? From Douro Valley grapes, aged and blended in Sandeman's lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.

What size is the bottle? 750mL.
