The Story Behind Rombauer Vineyards

Cabernet Sauvignon was the first wine Koerner and Joan Rombauer produced when they founded their winery on the Silverado Trail in St. Helena in 1980 — and it remains the house's signature red. Seeking a small-town agricultural life, the Rombauers had moved to Napa Valley in 1972; the winery they built in 1980 (with the inaugural wines bottled at Stag's Leap in 1982) became a custom-crush home to up-and-coming elite wineries including Dominus, Duckhorn, Merryvale, Etude, and Spottswoode. Today the family-owned estate draws fruit from its own vineyards and carefully selected sites across five Napa AVAs. Every cluster is handpicked, sorted in the vineyard and again in the cellar with optical sorting, then cold-soaked, tank- and barrel-fermented, basket-pressed, and aged in French oak for malolactic fermentation and maturation. Retailers report the 2019 vintage earned 93 points from Wine Enthusiast. Browse the Rombauer Vineyards brand collection and more red wines.

Tasting Notes

Brand notes describe an intense, almost black color with purple-reddish hues; aromas of black cherry, cassis, piecrust, spice, and mint leap from the glass. The palate is full and concentrated — black currant, sweet red cherry, blackberry, and seamlessly integrated oak — with the house's signature finely structured tannins and balanced acidity, building to a long finish that keeps going after the last sip.

How to Enjoy

Decant 30-60 minutes before serving at cellar temperature to open the aromatics. The Rombauers' own Joy of Cooking heritage suggests braised short ribs, lasagna bolognese, and pan-roasted rack of lamb; grilled steak is another natural match. This is a ready-to-enjoy Napa Cab — no cellaring required. Explore more red wines and other fine wines at Del Mesa Liquor.
