A limited edition released in summer 2018, it presents Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey — bottled a step above the standard black label's proof — in a recreation of the green-and-gold label Jack Daniel's wore before 1904. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

The Label Before the Black Label

The black-and-white label is iconic now, but Jack Daniel's early bottles were colourful — and the Legacy Edition Series was created to resurface those early designs. The First Edition recreates the green label with gold trim the distillery used sometime before 1904, with a red field behind the Old No. 7 emblem. The dating is written into the design itself: the label carries no gold medal mark, because Jack Daniel's won its gold medal at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and the medal appeared on labels from then on. Inside is the same single Old No. 7 recipe the distillery has kept for over 150 years, charcoal-mellowed in Lynchburg — at 86 proof rather than the standard 80. The modern range is on the Jack Daniel's vendor page.

Tasting Notes

The liquid is Old No. 7 itself: the brand's character of caramel, vanilla and wood from its charcoal-mellowed Tennessee whiskey, carried at a fuller 86 proof than the standard black label bottling. No edition-specific official tasting notes were published for this release.

How to Enjoy

A collector's bottle that also drinks — pour it neat to get Old No. 7 with the extra measure of proof, or set it beside the standard Gentleman Jack for a Lynchburg comparison. More American classics are in our bourbon whiskey collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What whiskey is inside the Legacy Edition First Edition?
Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey — the distillery's standard recipe and charcoal-mellowed process — bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) instead of the black label's usual 80 proof.

Why does the label look so different?
It recreates the green-and-gold label Jack Daniel's used before 1904, identified by the absence of the gold medal mark the distillery added after winning gold at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. It was the first release in the Legacy Edition Series, in summer 2018.

Is the Legacy Edition still made?
No. It was a limited-edition series bottling from 2018, and later editions carried different historic labels — this First Edition is the pre-1904 green-and-gold design.

Old No. 7 The All Time Go To Bourbon Whiskey

Never knew there was a first edition series release. Had to purchase one for my collection. Have not opened yet but I'm sure it's the same unaltered recipe that makes Old No. 7 the all time go to bourbon whiskey.
