Seven Generations, Twice Over
The Spot names began with Dublin wine merchants Mitchell & Son in the 1800s: empty wine and fortified-wine casks were sent to the Jameson Distillery on Bow Street, filled with new single pot still spirit, and matured in underground cellars, each cask daubed with a spot of coloured paint signalling the whiskey's age. The Generations Edition — the second Gold Spot release, following the inaugural 9-year-old of 2022 — honours two families with seven generations each: the Mitchells, guardians of Spot Whiskey and one of Ireland's premier wine families, and the Speri family of Secondo Marco winery, who have worked the soils of Valpolicella for seven generations and supplied the finishing casks. Distiller Katherine Condon of Irish Distillers led the release, and the bottle ships with no outer packaging, as a sustainability commitment. Tasting Notes
Irish Distillers' own notes: the nose brings red apples and dark fleshy fruits, fragrant blossom, sweet and woody undertones, clove and light nutmeg, with a subtle almond note. The taste is luscious and sweet — red berry compote, toffee apple and raisin, with delicate tannins working alongside the pot still spices and fruits. The finish lingers, the oak slowly fading, with the sweet wine and pot still spices having the last word.
How to Enjoy
Neat in a tulip glass, with a few drops of water if you want the wine-cask fruit to open further. This is a special-occasion Irish whiskey — the second-ever Gold Spot — and it rewards being poured that way.
