Currach Single Malt Irish Whiskey is a 46% ABV (92 proof) triple-distilled single malt in a 750mL bottle — first matured in first-fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels, then finished in Atlantic Wakame seaweed-charred virgin American oak casks by Origin Spirits Ireland, available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • ABV: 46% (92 proof) — non-chill filtered, no caramel colouring
  • Size: 750mL (live listing tag — CONFLICT: the US importer sell sheet lists 700mL; bottle read required)
  • Style: single malt — 100% Irish malted barley, triple distilled
  • Finish: Atlantic Wakame seaweed-charred virgin American oak casks — the world's first seaweed-charred-cask whiskey finish; wakame is sustainably hand-harvested off the wild Atlantic coast of Co. Clare
  • Origin: Ireland — Origin Spirits Ireland Ltd, Kilsheelan, Co. Tipperary
  • Edition: the second core bottling (after the Atlantic Kombu cask release); initial Wakame batch was 3,000 bottles

The Whiskey Finished in Seaweed-Charred Casks

Currach was the first whiskey in the world finished in seaweed-charred casks — and the Wakame expression is its second chapter. The base is a classic triple-distilled Irish single malt from 100% Irish malted barley, matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, then finished in virgin American oak casks that were charred with Atlantic Wakame seaweed — the "king of seaweeds," hand-harvested off the wild coast of Co. Clare. The result is complex yet subtle, vegetal yet sweet, light yet deep: Ireland's maritime terroir in a glass. Named for the currach, the traditional Irish boat that dates back to Neolithic times. Explore our whisky collection, browse Currach, or compare other Irish single malts.

Tasting Notes

Sea salt and rye cracker on the nose give way to golden caramel sweetness, with vegetal hints and a touch of iodine behind. The palate brings cracked pepper and oak spice, briny-yet-sweet maritime notes, white-wine fruitiness, butterscotch, and herbal green-tea undertones — finishing elegant, sweet and salty, with liquorice and plenty of umami.

How to Enjoy

Neat — this is a whiskey to contemplate, not to mix. The maritime character shows best at room temperature in a tulip glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a seaweed-charred cask?
Virgin American oak casks charred using Atlantic Wakame seaweed instead of (or alongside) traditional fire — Currach pioneered the technique, and the seaweed imparts briny, umami, maritime character to the whiskey.

Is it the Kombu or the Wakame version?
The Wakame — the second core bottling. The first release used Atlantic Kombu kelp; the Wakame expression shares the same single-malt DNA but with its own sweet, savoury, maritime profile.

Is it chill-filtered or colored?
Neither — non-chill filtered with no caramel colouring, bottled at 46% ABV.
