Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt Whisky is peat from the unlikeliest of places — 92 proof (46% ABV), 750mL, distilled and matured in Bangalore, India from peated barley imported from Scotland. Amrut — Sanskrit for "nectar of life" — helped put Indian single malt on the world map, and the peated expression brings ~23 PPM of clean smoke shaped by tropical maturation at 3,000 feet above sea level. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • ABV: 46% (92 proof)
  • Size: 750mL
  • Peat: ~23 PPM (peated barley from Scotland)
  • Maturation: oak barrels, minimum 4 years, in Bangalore's tropical climate
  • Distillery: Amrut Distilleries, Bangalore, India — est. 1948

Tropical Heat, Scottish Smoke

Bangalore's heat matures whisky far faster than Scotland's — intense angel's share, rapid oak interaction — so a minimum of four years in Indian oak drinks far older. The peated barley comes from Scotland, but everything after that is Indian: small-batch distillation, tropical aging, and a bottling at 46% with no chill filtration or added color. The result put Indian whisky on critics' maps worldwide and proved great peated malt doesn't need a Scottish postcode.

Tasting Notes

Golden amber. Delicate peat with earthy tones, hot spices, and a whiff of fruit on the nose. The palate hides the peatiness inside smoky, malty weight — pepper, herbal notes, molasses — before a strong malty finish where peat and smoke kick in at the end, clean and up-front with oak present.

How to Enjoy

Neat with a splash of water to open the spice — at 92 proof it rewards patience. For the peat-curious it sits between Highland smoke and Islay intensity; line it up against a Scotch peated malt and taste what tropical maturation does to the same idea.
