The Original Indian Single Malt

When Amrut launched this whisky in Glasgow in 2004, it was the first Indian single malt the world had seen — and it had to win blind tastings to be believed. The formula is disarmingly simple: Indian six-row barley from Punjab and Rajasthan, malted in Jaipur and Delhi, pot-distilled in Bengaluru and laid into oak. What makes it taste like itself is the place — at 3,000 feet in a tropical climate, the whisky breathes hard, the angels take their share quickly, and barley-sweet, fruity maturity arrives young. Set it next to its peated-fusion sibling in our whisky range, explore the international whisky shelf, or see the distillery on the Amrut Distilleries vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Liquorice and bourbon-like sweetness with burnt honeycomb and toffee, in near-perfect bitter-sweet balance. Palate: Enormous barley-oak sweetness — liquorice, molasses sugar and rich malt depth. Finish: Long and layered, sweet-dry oak resolving into cream toffee.

How to Enjoy

Neat or with a splash of water — at 46% it has the weight to take a few drops, which opens the honeycomb, liquorice and toffee. A fine introduction to world whisky for Scotch drinkers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Amrut whisky made? In Bengaluru, India, by Amrut Distilleries — a family house founded in 1948 that launched the first Indian single malt in 2004. The barley is Indian, grown in Punjab and Rajasthan.

Is Amrut Indian Single Malt peated? No. This is the original unpeated expression. (Amrut also bottles a separate Peated variant and the Fusion, which uses peated Scottish barley.)

Why does it taste older than expected? Bengaluru's heat and humidity accelerate cask interaction dramatically compared with Scotland, so Amrut's malts reach a mature, fruity profile at a young age — which is also why the distillery does not print one.
