Amrut Fusion Single Malt Whisky is the bottling that put Indian whisky on the world map — 50% ABV (100 proof), 750mL, marrying unpeated Indian barley whisky with peated Scottish barley whisky in a 75/25 fusion, matured in old and new American oak in Bengaluru, India. No age statement, non-chill filtered in spirit if not in name, and famously intense for its years. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Where Bangalore Meets the Peat Bog

Amrut — the name means 'nectar of the gods' — began distilling in Bengaluru in 1948 and launched its single malt in Glasgow in 2004. Fusion is its signature idea: pot-distilled whisky from Indian six-row barley, grown in Punjab and Rajasthan and malted in Jaipur and Delhi, fused with peated barley whisky from Scotland, then married and aged in American oak barrels. Bengaluru's tropical heat at 3,000 feet matures whisky fast — the angels take a far bigger share than in Scotland — so Fusion drinks well beyond its years. Pour it beside the distillery's unpeated malt in our whisky selection, browse the international whisky shelf, or visit the Amrut Distilleries vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Heavy and oaky, with fruit, chocolate and a growing peat presence. Palate: Massive and rich — oaky vanilla custard and dried fruit up front, then intense chocolate fudge and marmalade-like fruit as the smoke rolls in. Finish: Long and dry, peat and oak in balance with a molasses sweetness underneath.

How to Enjoy

Neat first — the 50% ABV carries the flavour without heat — then with a few drops of water, which pulls the chocolate and marmalade forward and softens the peat. A serious after-dinner pour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called Fusion? Because it fuses two barleys: unpeated Indian barley whisky makes up about three quarters of the blend, and peated Scottish barley whisky the remaining quarter, married together in oak.

How old is Amrut Fusion? Amrut does not publish an age statement for Fusion. Bengaluru's hot climate matures whisky much faster than Scotland's, so the casks are drawn when the flavour is ready rather than at a fixed age.

Is Amrut Fusion peated? Partly — the Scottish quarter of the recipe is peated barley whisky, so the smoke is present but woven into fruit and chocolate rather than dominating.
