A Tequila Distilled with the Fruit of One Field

Amatitán, in the valley below the Volcán de Tequila, is one of the historic birthplaces of tequila, and Master Tequilero Alberto Partida works there the old way: wood fire throughout, a stone tahona for crushing, open wood-vat fermentation with the agave fibres and wild yeast, and small copper pot stills. Barrancas goes further. The agave comes from a single field — the Barrancas ranch — and on the second distillation Partida adds the wild mango, mamey and plum that grow around that field, a technique the distillery likens to both the mezcal pechuga tradition and Mexico's fruit ponche. The spirit then rests a year in glass damajuanas before bottling at still strength. The wood fire gives it a distinctly smoky, mezcal-adjacent edge — but this is certified tequila, through and through. Browse the Amatitena collection and more tequila at Del Mesa.

Tasting Notes

Importer Skurnik's tech-sheet notes: the alcohol's heat is subtle, offering coriander, candied apple, roasted carrot, mango skin, underripe plum, paw paw, nutmeg, burnt lemon, mesquite and roasted pear — a full-spectrum, roasted-agave profile unlike any standard blanco.

How to Enjoy

Sip it neat in small pours — at 55% ABV this is a full-strength, undiluted expression, and a few drops of water will open the fruit. It is a bottle for agave purists who want to taste a single field, a tahona and a wood fire in one glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Amatitena Barrancas a tequila or a sotol? It is a tequila — 100% Blue Weber agave from Amatitán, Jalisco, made at NOM 1477 by Alberto Partida. It is not sotol, which is a Dasylirion spirit from northern Mexico, despite Barrancas' smoky, mezcal-adjacent flavour.

Why is Barrancas 55% ABV? It is bottled at still strength — distilled at or near proof with minimal dilution, at the maximum ABV allowed for tequila (55% / 110 proof), after a year resting in glass demijohns.

What fruit is in Amatitena Barrancas? Wild mango, mamey and plum grown around the single Barrancas agave field are added on the second copper-pot distillation — distilled with the spirit, in the manner of a mezcal pechuga, not infused or flavoured afterwards.

How is Amatitena tequila made? Traditionally: agave cooked over direct wood fire, crushed by tahona, open-fermented with fibres and wild yeast in wood tanks, and double-distilled in wood-fired copper pot stills.

Still strength, single field, distilled with fruit — Amatitena Barrancas is at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA, while this limited release lasts.
