Morlacco Blood: A Poet Named This Liqueur
When Luxardo's marasca cherries are harvested at the start of every summer, part of the juice is separated and left to mature until natural fermentation occurs; neutral alcohol is then added to halt fermentation and the liqueur ages in oak vats. In 1919, during the Fiume military expedition, the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio renamed it "Sangue Morlacco" — Morlacco Blood — for its deep red colour, and his signed dedication still appears on the front label. Tasting Notes
Luxardo's own notes: a pungent aroma of freshly squeezed cherry juice with faint white pepper and marzipan; the taste is intense, thick and syrupy, its sweetness partially offset by fruit tartness — concentrated cherry juice and cherry jam with black pepper spice.
How to Enjoy
Neat or over ice as an after-dinner drink, or in classic cocktails — Luxardo's perfect serve is a Cherry Negroni: gin, Sangue Morlacco and sweet vermouth, stirred with lemon zest and a maraschino cherry. It also pairs with dark chocolate and cheese, and pours beautifully over mixed berries or ice cream.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Sangue Morlacco mean? "Morlacco Blood" — the name poet Gabriele D'Annunzio gave the liqueur in 1919 for its deep red colour. His dedication is printed on the front label.
How is it different from Luxardo Maraschino? Maraschino is a clear distillate of the whole cherry; Sangue Morlacco is made from the fermented juice, so it is deep red, thick and intensely fruity rather than dry and nutty.
What is the ABV? 30% ABV (60 proof), in a 750mL bottle.
What cocktails use it? The Blood and Sand and the Singapore Sling family of drinks are classics, and Luxardo's own perfect serve is the Cherry Negroni.
