Kilkerran Heavily Peated Scotch Whisky
Kilkerran Heavily Peated Scotch Whisky is a cask-strength Campbeltown single malt from Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland, released in small twice-yearly batches at natural cask strength, peated to around 45 PPM, non-chill filtered with natural colour. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.
Glengyle was founded in 1872 and returned to production in 2004 under the J&A Mitchell group, sister distillery to Springbank — all barley is floor-malted at Springbank and every step of production happens on site in Campbeltown during a short seasonal run. The Heavily Peated series has settled since Batch 7 on a recipe of roughly 90% ex-bourbon and 10% ex-sherry casks, bottled at natural cask strength with no age statement so the peat, not the calendar, sets the character.
Tasting profile (current distillery notes): honeycomb, wholemeal toast, chargrilled seafood and smoky bacon on the nose; smoke, lemon shortbread, ham and melon on the palate; a finish of peat smoke, lemon zest, icing sugar and sweet butter. Serving note: pour neat in a Glencairn and add a few drops of water to open up the cask-strength smoke.
