From Ensenada's Oldest Cantina
In 1892, in Ensenada, Baja California, Juan Hussong began serving his own handmade tequila at the cantina that still bears his name — Baja California's oldest and best-known cantina, and, by the brand's own telling, a place where the Margarita is rumoured to have made an early appearance. The tequila still follows a slow programme: agave from both Jalisco regions, cooked in brick ovens and autoclaves, fermented with naturally occurring yeast for around fifty hours — far longer than the industrial norm — double distilled, rested in used bourbon barrels and hand-bottled in clay jugs, sealed the old way. Find the brand on the Hussong's vendor page or among the rest of our tequila range.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Caramel, butterscotch, brown sugar and vanilla over sweet agave, citrus, baking spice and oak. Palate: Caramel and vanilla with banana cake, fruity agave, cinnamon, nutmeg and toasted bread. Finish: Toffee, vanilla, agave, cinnamon and oak — smooth and elegant, in the brand's words.
How to Enjoy
Neat or on the rocks at cantina pace. Given the house history, it also makes a Margarita with a story attached — and the clay jug stays on the bar either way.

Is the Margarita really from Hussong's? The cantina, founded in Ensenada in 1892, is one of the places where the Margarita's invention is claimed, and the brand itself says the drink is rumoured to have made its first known appearance there — one of several competing origin stories.
