A Cool Hillside South of Yountville

The Groth family bought the Hillview site in 1982, initially for its Merlot, and the small house on the property served as the winery's offices before the Oakville winery was completed. In 1996 the family saw that the site's microclimate — tucked alongside the Mayacamas foothills and cooled by San Pablo Bay breezes — and its diverse soils were ideal for Chardonnay, and strategically replanted the vineyard to the variety, keeping a block of their finest Merlot. It is now a single-vineyard estate wine: sustainably farmed, selectively pressed, fermented entirely in French oak with only a light touch of new wood, and rested on its lees so the cool-site fruit keeps its freshness while gaining layers of toastiness and creaminess. Tasting Notes

The winery's house profile for Hillview: sweet peach, citrus and exotic tropical fruit over an underlying minerality — the signature of the Oak Knoll District. Barrel fermentation and sur lie ageing add a gentle toast and cream to the mid-palate, and the finish stays lively rather than heavy: a Chardonnay that is rich and refreshing at once, enjoyable young and after several years in bottle.

How to Enjoy

Serve chilled with seafood, roast poultry or creamy pasta — the wine's acidity cuts richness cleanly. It is equally at home as a slow glass on its own, where the peach, citrus and mineral layers have room to show.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Hillview Vineyard? South of Yountville in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, alongside the Mayacamas foothills — a cooler site cooled by San Pablo Bay breezes, and Groth's own 44-acre estate, purchased in 1982.

Is Groth Hillview Chardonnay oaked? Yes, with restraint — it is fermented exclusively in French oak barrels, only 14% of them new, and aged eight months sur lie, so the oak adds texture and a light toast rather than dominating the fruit.

What grape is in Groth Hillview Vineyard Chardonnay? 100% Chardonnay, estate-grown at Hillview — principally Clone 4 (Wente) and Clone 76 (Dijon) fruit per the winery.

What food pairs with Groth Hillview Chardonnay? Seafood, poultry and creamy pasta dishes are the classic matches; its bright acidity and mineral edge also suit richer fish and soft cheeses.
