Creyente Azul Cristalino Anejo is an 80-proof (40% ABV) 750mL añejo mezcal from Oaxaca, Mexico — aged one year in new American oak casks, then filtered through charcoal to crystal clarity, making it the only aged-and-filtered (cristalino) expression in the Creyente mezcal line. It is an ensamble of the finest Espadín and Cuishe agaves, cooked in pit ovens, crushed by tahona, fermented naturally, and double distilled in copper pot stills in the Valles Centrales and Sierra Sur. (Note: despite the listing title, this bottle is a mezcal — every competition lists it as one.) It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

An Añejo Mezcal, Made Transparent

The cristalino idea started in tequila — age the spirit, then filter out the color while keeping the oak — and Creyente's Azul is the rare mezcal to take it on. The añejo rests a year in new American oak, picking up caramel and spice, then the proprietary charcoal filtration strips the color without stripping the character: toffee, sweet banana crème brûlée, espresso, and smoke over milk chocolate (World Mezcal Awards 2024 Silver tasting note). It is an ensamble of Espadín and Cuishe from Oaxaca's Valles Centrales and Sierra Sur, made the old way — pit ovens, tahona wheel, open fermentation, double copper distillation — by Proximo Spirits, the family behind José Cuervo. Tasting Notes

Caramelized banana and vanilla cream from the oak, toffee and espresso depth, a whisper of smoke and buttery spice — clarity in the glass, añejo character on the palate.

How to Enjoy

Neat in a copita — an aged, filtered mezcal is a sipping spirit, and chilling it would mute the filtration's whole point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Creyente Azul a tequila or a mezcal?
It is a mezcal — an añejo ensamble of Espadín and Cuishe agaves, aged in new American oak and charcoal-filtered to clarity. Every competition (IWSC, World Mezcal Awards, USA Spirits Ratings) lists it as a mezcal.

What does "cristalino" mean here?
The aged spirit is filtered (charcoal/proprietary) to remove the color while retaining the oak character — clarity with añejo depth.

Who makes Creyente mezcal?
Proximo Spirits (the Beckmann family, also behind José Cuervo), which launched the Creyente mezcal brand in 2016.

The only aged-and-filtered mezcal in the Creyente line — order Creyente Azul Cristalino Anejo online from Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.
