From the Historic Heart of Chianti
Chianti is made across eight adjacent areas, but only the oldest, original zone between Florence and Siena may call itself Chianti Classico, under its own stricter DOCG covering blend, yield and ageing. Banfi — the Montalcino estate founded in 1978 by John and Harry Mariani — also farms in the Classico zone, and its regular Classico is built for the table: Sangiovese-led, briefly rested in large French oak casks rather than long barrel ageing, and bottled the summer after the harvest. Tasting Notes
Nose: Intense cherries, plums and violets. Palate: Rich cherry with a leather note, supple tannins and good acidity. Finish: Fresh and food-friendly.
How to Enjoy
Serve it with red-sauced pastas, grilled meats and roasts — the producer's own pairings — where its acidity and supple tannin cut through tomato and fat alike.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is Chianti Classico different from Chianti? Classico comes only from the historic zone between Florence and Siena under a separate, stricter DOCG; the other seven Chianti areas use the plain Chianti name.
Is this the Riserva? No. The title is the regular Classico. Banfi's Riserva is a separate, longer-aged bottling with different specs, and none of them apply here.
What grapes are in it? Predominantly Sangiovese, plus small amounts of Canaiolo Nero and Cabernet Sauvignon, per the producer. Banfi publishes no percentages for this wine.
