Balcones Texas Single Malt Whisky
Balcones Texas Single Malt Whisky is a 750mL single malt bottled at 53% ABV (106 proof), made from 100% malted barley — Scottish Golden Promise — and matured in a combination of new and used American, French and Hungarian oak under the Texas sun at Balcones Distilling in Waco. It is the distillery's flagship "1" Texas Single Malt: a traditional malt process given a virgin-oak-forward, New World profile, and a pioneer of what became the American single malt category. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

The "1" That Started Texas Single Malt
When Balcones began distilling in Waco in 2009, a Texas single malt barely existed as an idea. Texas 1 applied classic malt technique — a single barley variety, pot distillation — to a climate that matures whisky at several times the Scottish rate, with heat and temperature swings pulling honeyed, toasted depth out of new and used oak. The distillery reports it took Best American Single Malt, Best Single Malt and Whisky of the Year at the 2023 Tales of the Cocktail New Orleans Spirits Competition. Tasting Notes
Per the distillery: toffee and overripe fruit on the nose, with ripe buttered stone fruit, banana, pears, honey and delicate citrus; toasted malt and honey with baked pears and apples on the palate; a long finish of cinnamon and cloves over rich malt and wood.
