Avua Prata Cachaca
Avua Prata Cachaca is cachaca in its purest form: an 84-proof (42% ABV) unaged Brazilian spirit rested six months in stainless steel in this 750mL bottle — and it is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.
Avua is produced at Fazenda da Quinta in Carmo, Rio de Janeiro — a family distillery founded in 1923 — for the Avuá brand created in 2009. Pesticide-free estate sugarcane is hand-cut, pressed with a waterwheel, fermented about 24 hours with wild yeast, and twice distilled in copper pot stills, then brought to proof with pure water. Prata ("silver") never touches wood — just a six-month stainless-steel rest before bottling — so the spirit arrives as the distillery made it: lush, crisp, and alive.
Tasting notes: a lush, crisp spirit with subtle floral notes; intense overripe banana, grassy and floral on the nose; dry and delicate on the palate with fresh sugarcane juice character; a lengthy, dry finish of sweet cereals and gentle spice. (One retailer claimed a 2-month rest; every other source — and the consistent figure — is 6 months.)
Why buy the Prata? Because it's the benchmark unaged cachaca — the reference bottle for what fresh cane juice tastes like when nothing gets in the way — and the only correct base for a serious caipirinha. Browse the cachaca collection, the rum collection, and the Avua brand collection.
Serving note: the classic caipirinha (lime, sugar, crushed ice) — or a ti'-punch style neat pour to taste the cane.
What does "Prata" mean? "Silver" — an unaged cachaca; this one rests six months in stainless steel tanks, never in wood.
What is the ABV? 42% ABV (84 proof), 750mL.
Is it really unaged? Yes — no wood contact at all; the stainless-steel rest settles the spirit without adding color or oak character.
What makes Avua different? Single-estate cane, wild-yeast fermentation, and double copper-pot distillation at a century-old Rio de Janeiro distillery.
