Amatitena Tequila Anejo Limited Edition Aged in Castle & Key Rye Whiskey Barrels is a 42% ABV (84 proof) añejo tequila, 750mL, rested one full year exclusively in Castle & Key Restoration Rye whiskey barrels — just 2,112 bottles produced. It's a cross-border collaboration between two traditionalists: the old-world tequila methods of Amatitán, Jalisco and the rye whiskey barrels of Kentucky's Castle & Key Distillery, coopered by Speyside Cooperage — available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

Amatiteña is made at NOM 1477 in Amatitán — the tiny village that gives añejo tequila its name — under maestro tequilero Alberto Partida. Estate-grown 100% Blue Weber agave is cooked in a mesquite-wood-fired stone oven (no steam), milled by automated tahona, fermented open-air with the fibers in wooden tinas using spring water and ambient yeast, then distilled in 19th-century wood-fired copper pot stills. Additive-free, always. For this limited edition, the añejo spent its year in barrels that held Castle & Key's Restoration Rye, layering Kentucky rye spice over Amatitán's earthy agave character — a 2025 SIP Awards Top 5 finalist for Best Tequila.

Tasting notes (importer Skurnik): aromas of herbsaint, marjoram, fennel, dill, avocado leaf, wet hay, raspberry seed, fallen maple leaves, fresh tobacco, and burnt marshmallow; a palate of birch, salted caramel, toffee, cinnamon bark, baked pear, nutmeg, and sweet potato. A contemplative, savory añejo built for neat sipping.

Why buy: Rye-barrel-rested añejo is genuinely rare — and at 2,112 bottles, this collaboration won't be repeated. It's the bottle for the drinker who loves both agave and whiskey. Explore more tequila at Del Mesa Liquor or browse Amatitena at Del Mesa Liquor.
