Cascahuin Reposado Tequila and Fortaleza Reposado Winter Blend 2023 at a Jalisco distillery with blue agave and a tahona wheel at Del Mesa Liquor

Reposado Tequila Guide: From a $64.99 Cascahuin to Fortaleza's Winter Blend 2023

Reposado is the tequila class built on restraint: by law it rests in oak for at least two months and less than a year, long enough to pick up color and softness without losing the agave. If you want to buy reposado tequila online, the five bottles below show the full range of what that rest can do — from a $64.99 Cascahuin rested in decades-old barrels to Fortaleza's $799.99 six-barrel Winter Blend. Del Mesa Liquor, a family-owned liquor store in San Diego, California, stocks all five in its reposado tequila collection, and every one is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor today.

Traditional reposados, rested the slow way

  • Cascahuin Reposado Tequila — $64.99 (6 in stock). The traditionalist's reposado: 100% agave rested 6 to 8 months in spent American oak barrels that have been used for tequila for more than 20 years, so the wood whispers instead of shouting — cooked agave, honey and vanilla over a dry, earthy base. Cascahuin makes it at El Arenal in the Tequila Valley; our blanco tequila guide covers the unaged side of the same house style.
  • Lagrimas del Valle Reposado Tequila El Chiqueno 2022 — $79.99 (1 in stock). A vintage in a glass: every drop distilled from agave harvested in 2022 on a single ranch, El Chiqueno, south of the Rio Santiago near Amatitan, then rested 3 months in ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at 46% ABV (92 proof). Made at NOM 1123 — the Cascahuin distillery — by Master Distiller Salvador "Chava" Rosales Trejo. One bottle left in stock.
  • Tequila Cabal Reposado Caballo — $84.99 (5 in stock). The estate bottling in the horse-head decanter: certified-organic estate agave, slow-baked 42 hours in a 1911 masonry oven, rested 8 months in charred American white oak bourbon barrels, additive-free, at 40% ABV (80 proof). It took Gold at the 2021 San Francisco Spirits Competition — the bottle looks like a trophy because, at this point, it is one.

Long rests and a limited winter marriage

  • Amor Mio Reposado Tequila — $89.99 (2 in stock). Rested 11 months — just under the one-year ceiling of the reposado class — in American and French oak at Tequila Tres Mujeres (NOM 1466) in Los Valles, and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a hand-painted ceramic presentation bottle. The French oak pushes it toward spice and dried fruit; it is the most decorative bottle in this guide and drinks like it belongs in the gift sets shelf too.
  • Fortaleza Reposado Winter Blend 2023 — $799.99 (5 in stock). The collector's reposado: Fortaleza's annual limited Winter Blend marries six different barrel types into one bottling, at 44% ABV (88 proof). Underneath the barrel marriage it is still classic Fortaleza — stone tahona-crushed agave, open-air wooden-tank fermentation, small copper pot stills at NOM 1493 — wearing vanilla, caramel, cinnamon and orange zest from the six-cask blend. Our Fortaleza guide tells the distillery's full story.

Reposado is the natural bridge between the blanco shelf and the long-aged bottles in our extra anejo guide: sip the Cascahuin and Lagrimas neat to taste the agave first, and save the Winter Blend for the end of the night. Questions about delivery are answered on our FAQs page.

Frequently asked questions

How long is reposado tequila aged?

By Mexican law, reposado rests in oak for a minimum of two months and less than one year. In this guide that spans 3 months for the Lagrimas del Valle El Chiqueno 2022 and 11 months for the Amor Mio — the longer the rest, the more vanilla, caramel and oak spice the tequila picks up.

What is the difference between reposado and anejo tequila?

Time in wood. Reposado rests 2 to 12 months; anejo ages 1 to 3 years and extra anejo at least 3. Reposado keeps more bright cooked-agave character under a thinner layer of oak, which is why traditional producers like Cascahuin rest it in very old, neutral barrels.

Should reposado tequila be sipped or mixed?

Both. A traditionally made reposado like Cascahuin or Lagrimas del Valle is a sipping tequila — neat or with one cube. Reposado also makes a richer Margarita or Paloma than blanco. Limited bottles like the Fortaleza Winter Blend 2023 are best sipped neat.

Where can I buy reposado tequila online?

At Del Mesa Liquor — all five reposados in this guide are in stock and available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, from the $64.99 Cascahuin Reposado to the $799.99 Fortaleza Reposado Winter Blend 2023.
