It starts as Paladar's estate reposado: 100% Blue Weber agave grown seven years in the family's own fields, slow-cooked in brick ovens, fermented with a proprietary and wild yeast blend in open-air pine boxes and twice distilled in stainless pot stills with copper coils. After resting in oak, the reposado is finished in American oak barrels that previously held Tempranillo, Spain's great red wine grape, and bottled at 40% ABV in a 700mL bottle, each one hand-dipped in the volcanic soil of the agave fields. The label confirms it: Reposado Tequila finished in Tempranillo wine casks, NOM 1109. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Proof / ABV: 80 proof (40% ABV)

Size: 700mL

Agave: 100% Blue Weber, 7 years, estate fields, Tequila, Jalisco

Distillery: NOM 1109 (El Llano / Tequila Arette), master distiller Eduardo Orendain Jr.

Finish: American oak barrels that previously held Tempranillo wine

Origin: Jalisco, Mexico

A Rioja Finish on a Jalisco Reposado

Wine-cask finishes are rare in tequila because the wine has to lift the agave, not paint over it.
