Hennessy is celebrating its 250th anniversary with the release of its limited-edition Hennessy 250 Collector Blend. This distinctive Cognac comprises eaux-de-vie matured in Hennessy’s cellars—located just across the Charente River from the castle where King François I was born—for 15 to 35 years. To put that into perspective, the eaux-de-vie of VS-, VSOP-, and XO-grade Cognacs must be aged at least 2, 4, or 6 years, respectively.
Hennessy’s master blender and taster, Yann Fillioux, who represents the seventh generation of his family involved with the production of Hennessy Cognacs, spent four years perfecting the blend, drawing from dozens of different eaux-de-vie, each double-distilled from wine of Ugni Blanc grapes grown in the chalky, limestone-rich soil and mild climate of the Cognac AOC.
The result is a rich amber Cognac delivering a spicy aroma and notes of nutmeg, bitter orange, peppermint leaf, saffron, and licorice, with a honeyed finish. Complex and powerful, yet balanced and elegant, it is a fitting tribute to Fillioux’s predecessors and ancestors alike, and another feather in the cap of Fillioux’s distinguished 50-year career. Only 250 barrels were made, each holding 250 liters.
